The surprise tree in our garden is definitely a plum. The first fruit are just starting to ripen into the most beautiful red. I ate the first one as I took these photos, and they have sweet yellow flesh.
The branches are loaded, so we are not going to be short of fruit in the next few weeks. (I wonder if I can give some away to jam-making friends?)
We’ve had another garden surprise as well. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that an unassuming little stick of a tree has begun growing a few peaches.
I’m actually not overly fond of eating peaches due to the fuzz factor, but it’s still exciting! I can always peel them! Peaches are probably the most adorable fruit there is.

I imagine that anyone with extra plums or peaches would soon find themselves with more jam-making friends than they know what to do with! You could always try listing your trees on that wild foods website/map for Auckland ;)

We still have jam left from last year’s effort with the plums so I don’t know what I’m going to do when the next lot get ripe – and ours are not good for eating.

We recently got a bushel or two of plums from our family in Wales and started making plum everything! Of particular note were our plum vodka and plum gin, which are suprisingly good. I wish we had more access to fresh fruit where we live now though, it’s such a lovely feeling to pluck something off a tree and bite into it straight away. But anyway, hurrah for drupes!

Speaking of cute food, since you are the master of kawaii I doubt you’ve missed this, but have you seen Epicute? Many of the pictures remind me so much of your work (and that’s a very good thing!)
